Blackburn with Darwen Council has pledged its commitment to town centre traders by announcing free parking on Saturdays.
The scheme came into force on Saturday July 7 and charges have been waived at all Council owned car parks.
The move follows the recommendations of retail guru Mary Portas who says free parking is one of the best ways to boost high street trade.
Blackburn is the first town of its size in the country to take such a bold step in a bid to support shops and market stall holders.
The plan will see around 1,200 free spaces offered including those at Feilden Street, Waves' carpark and Starkie Street.
Markets throughout the UK, including Blackburn Market are participating in the high profile ‘Love Your Local Market’ campaign from 15th - 29th May 2013, which celebrates the importance that markets play in the heart of the community, not only for retail but as a valuable community asset and focal point.
Organised by the National Association of British Market Authorities, the ‘Love Your Local Market’ fortnight also looks to attract those who may be interested in becoming a market trader.
Events at Blackburn Market include:
Saturday 18th May - Community Day - featuring local charities and buskers providing entertainment throughout the day.
Saturday 25th May - Family Fun Day, a range of activities for all the family!
