Just six months after it opened, the six day state of the art facility has been awarded the accolade by the country’s leading markets organization, The National Association of British Market Authorities.
The NABMA has promoted Market of the Year for the last five years. It has proved to be one of the most important projects undertaken by NABMA.
The results were announced at NABMA’s one-day conference which was held today.
Blackburn’s new contemporary market opened its doors on Wednesday, June 1 last year and is based in the ground floor of the busy Mall shopping centre.
Blackburn with Darwen Council, in partnership with the Mall Fund, has invested heavily in the Market as part of its commitment to the regeneration of the town centre and 80 per cent of the stalls have already been allocated, both to existing and new traders.
Councillor Dave Harling, Executive Member for Regeneration, said: "We are delighted with the news and feel the award is justified as we are very proud of our fabulous new market. A big thank you to everyone involved including the market traders, our partner the Mall and our customers who have given us tremendous feedback. It is nice that our market, which is drawing thousands of visitors every week, has been recognised nationally."
